Team Building Games and Exercises for Kids

An educator needs to build a community environment in the classroom which is the most important goal.It is necessary to ensure that your students not only function as individuals but also have an effective role to play as member of a team. Teamwork is important in many aspects of life and learning these skills at a young age can be very useful in school and beyond. The corporate world, for example, relies on strong teamwork in order to succeed. Team building games and exercises can be used for all ages, from preschool to high school and in between.

Games and exercises designed to strengthen teamwork benefit the children in a variety of ways. They learn how to communicate as well as listen to others. They learn better problem solving skills and how to function as an important and valuable part of a group. Some of them get to use their leadership initiative while those who are not natural leaders can build this skill. These games and activities can benefit children with all different personalities, from the shy introvert to the boisterous ringleader. You will find that the children have so much fun with the activities they may not even realize they're being educated.

One fun game is called the Birthday Line Up. Have your students line up in order of their birthday month and day. The hard part is, they cannot use verbal communication. They can use sign language, charades, written communication or other skills. Another easy and fun game is called Keep the Ball Up. This is self explanatory and requires a beach ball. Have students keep the ball in the air for as many hits as they can. They will need to organize themselves into groups and devise a strategy. Yet another fast and fun activity is the Group Knot. Students stand in a circle and grab each others hands randomly. Then, they must work together to untangle the knot they've created without letting go.

You may want to get some books filled with team building games and exercises for kids. There are certainly plenty of titles from which you can choose. When you are ready to use an exercise, just flip through your book and choose one you think will be fun and educational for the kids. Here are some recommended titles: Team Challenges: 170+ Group Activities to Build Cooperation, Communication, and Creativity by Kris Bordessa and Character Building Activities for Kids: Ready-to-Use Character Educational Lessons & Activities for the Elementary Grades by Darlene Mannix.
