Choosing a Team Building Strategy
In the classroom as well the corporate world ,teamwork has proved to be important. The functions of a strong teamwork is more effective when compared to a weak one. When your team is functioning at an optimum level, communication is improved, problem solving skills are sharpened and trust is developed among teammates. This is especially important in the corporate world because the success of the company is at stake. If you feel your team is less than stellar, you should devise a team building strategy to facilitate positive change. There are various ways you can enhance the team environment in your office.
One way is with simple exercises and activities. These activities can be like games with a purpose. For example, one activity is the Lava River. For this activity you will need to give every two members of your team a carpet square. Section off a portion of the floor or ground to be the river, using rope. The goal is for everyone to make it across without scooting or sliding on the tiles. The trick here is that the tiles must be touched at all times or they will be swept into the river. This exercise takes problem solving skills, communication and of course, teamwork. This is just one example of a team building exercise. You can find more of these exercises in books, online or you can make your own.
Another way to strengthen your team is to attend a retreat or workshop. There are retreats that last anywhere from a half day to several days. Some have a theme, such as a cowboy retreat, movie making retreat or comedy club retreat. Others are held at luxurious tropical resorts or ski lodges and feature seminars and workshops to strengthen your team. What you should choose all depends on what your company can afford. Even sporting events like softball, rock climbing or laser tag can help your team grow stronger.
If you are having trouble choosing a team building strategy, you may want to hire a consultant to help you. Team building consultants are trained in the art of strengthening a corporate family, so to speak. They can evaluate your company's needs and devise a strategy that is customized to your team and the areas that need to be worked on. Consultants charge different rates based on their services and experience so shop around to find the best professional for your budget and team needs.
